From The Georgetown Independent & Free Press

Four Georgetown moms will be picking up their pom-poms for a Toronto Argonauts game Friday.

Michelle Armstrong, Kim Auty, Loretta Cordick and Diane Shipley-Kardash, all longtime Georgetown residents, will be part of the halftime show at the Argos-Winnipeg Blue Bombers game at 7 p.m.

The alumni cheerleaders are performing to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Argo Sunshine Girls.

All four ladies are former Toronto Argo Cheerleaders. Shipley-Kardash was on the team from 1987-1991, Armstrong 1989-1992, Cordick 1990-1992 and Auty spent one year on the team in 1989 before cheering for the Ottawa Roughriders in 1990.

Fifty former Argo Cheerleaders will be dancing to These Boots are Made For Walking, choreographed by Linda Googh.

Argo Cheerleaders representing all 15 years they were a team (1978 to 1993) will be taking part in the celebration. The team started weekly rehearsals in late June to be ready for the game. Girls from as far away as Singapore, Los Angeles and Vancouver have flown in for rehearsals in Toronto.

The Canadian Football League game has a “retro” theme. There will be former Argo players at the game as well, wearing their old jerseys and the “All Time Argo” will be named to the Football Hall of Fame.

Shipley-Kardash, who was on the team the longest, says she still considers several of her former teammates her closest life-long friends and has traveled to Florida, Las Vegas and Los Angeles many times to reunite with former teammates.

The ladies are all married moms in their early forties who moved to Georgetown in the ’90’s from others parts of the GTA. Combined they have nine children, all students in Georgetown ranging in age from 7-15. Auty and Shipley-Kardash have sons who play football in Georgetown. All four have daughters dancing at local dance studios.

Auty and her husband Paul own Georgetown Chrysler while Shipley-Kardash, an actress, has performed with Georgetown Little Theatre and Georgetown Globe Productions.
Cordick recently returned to work part time at a local law firm and Armstrong is a teacher at Georgetown District High School.

Found a couple of good reads today while at work actually.

The first one former NFL GM <>Ted Sundquist actually scouts the Browns/Cowboys matchup over at Pro Football Talk.

Cleveland must seize the initiative and take control of the ground game early. Jamal Lewis had a rebirth of sorts in 2007, rebounding for 1,304 yards over 15 games, but more importantly adding almost a full yard to his per-carry average. Behind Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach on the left side, Lewis and the rest of the Browns’ running game pounded out over 5 yards per carry.

Cleveland needs to stay on schedule and keep the chains moving. Their offense was one of the more consistent and successful units when faced with short yardage on third down. The front five OL combination is more than capable of holding their own against a Dallas defensive line that was one of the League leaders in short yardage situations.

The second is from the Dallas Morning news, and it is Cowboys Coach Wade Phillips stating that he doesn’t believe the Browns current Dawg Pound environment is anything close to what the Browns had at the old stadium. You’d have to agree with him but I think that this comes from so many factors, including that the world is just a different place today.

The only route from the press box to the Municipal Stadium field was through the stands, so Phillips got face time with Cleveland’s crazy fans on more than a few occasions. He thinks the Dawg Pound has mellowed a bit since the the creatively named Cleveland Browns Stadium was built.

“I think they still have some semblance of it, but it’s not near what it used to be,” Phillips said. “They threw a lot more stuff back then.”

I think that this sunday will be one of those games in which he sees some Old Municipal on the Lake.

Last night I <>tweeted that my buddy was at the McKinley Hotel in Canton, Ohio with past and present NFL Hall of Fame members. It was a shirt and tie event. All night, he was calling or texting me with updates. The lucky bastard met John Madden, Jerry Jones, Joe Gibbs, Emmitt Smith, Jim Gray (oh well) and schmoozed with every NFL legend that was at the pre-induction event.

The event was all the booze you could drink and all the food you could eat. Apparently, the food looked so good that he didn’t even want to eat it.

All night I was asking him to ask some questions that a local in Canton would ask. Do the 2010 Browns have any hopes, and is Colt McCoy going to be worth a damn in their humble but Hall of Fame opinion.

The highlight of the night that he’s told me about thus far, was his exchange with Keyshawn Johnson. They were discussing the topic of Tim Tebow. Keyshawn said that he thinks Tebow sucks as an NFL QB prospect and he’ll be doing college football commentary in three years. He also feels that the Cleveland Browns are going to struggle mightily.

Take it FWIW.

The very good teams find a way on those occasions to come out on top. On this day, the Tennesee Titans put forth far from their best effort after a bye week, but it was still enough to slide past the Atlanta Falcons and improve to 3-1. The Titans are now 9-2 with Vince Young as their starting QB.

The Falcons were not without their chances to tie this game. The Falcons botched a first-down pitch from Byron Leftwich to Warrick Dunn at the Titans 1-yard-line. The fumble took Atlanta back to the 9, where Leftwich threw two straight incompletions and was sacked on fourth down, sealing Tennessee’s 20-13 win.

The Titans turned the ball over 5 times today. Three of those turnovers were Vince Young interceptions. There was nothing about this game that was statistically pretty. The mark of this Titans team is to hit teams in the mouth and win with physical, ugly play. This also happened to be the game in which I picked for my survivor pool, and for the 5th week in a row, I was successful–and the Colts are still on the board for me as well as the Packers.

By Stephen Witt
YourNabe.com

The Nets’ move to Brooklyn in the proposed Barclays Center arena may be stalled due to ongoing litigation and a crumbling economy, but two of the team’s star dancers have already made the move to the Borough of Kings.

Jerese Kimbough, 26, originally from outside Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Allison Barnes, 22, originally from Birmingham, Alabama have both decided to call Brooklyn their home since moving to the area and successfully auditioning to become part of the dance troupe, which entertains fans during time-outs at all Nets home games.

“I love Brooklyn and I love the nature when I look out over the (Prospect) park every morning,” said Kimbough, who lives along Ocean Avenue near Parkside Avenue in the Flatbush/Lefferts Gardens section of the borough.

“There’s a lot of community, whether Russian or other ethnicities, but it’s somehow integrated at the same time. When you go to the park you see it all. The dog community gets together, and artists get together. It’s always a parade down there and very festive,” she added.

Kimbough said her favorite food she found in the borough is a small wing shop on Washington Avenue near the Brooklyn Museum, and that she came to New York City to pursue a career in dance.

“My ambition is to continue to grow as a person and as an artist and see where it takes me,” she said.

“The Nets have me training very hard, and have helped me develop strength and in so many aspects of who I am as a woman, as a dancer and as a professional,” she added.

Jerese

Kimbough also supports the team’s move to Brooklyn, saying it will be good for the borough to have a team of its own.

“Hopefully it will provide more jobs in the community as well and more activity in general,” she said.

Barnes, who moved to the area just six months ago and lives in Bedford-Stuyvesant, said she thinks the team coming to Brooklyn will offer a major boost to the borough.

“It will be a great opportunity for Brooklyn fans to have a team of their own to look up to,” said Barnes. “Kids get a chance to see something positive and have an opportunity to go to local games and see how we do it. The family that lives below me asks all the time about when the Nets are coming to Brooklyn, and they’re real excited about the move.”

While Barnes lives in Bed-Stuy, she said her favorite place to hang out is in nearby Fort Greene.

“My cousin’s girlfriend lives in that area, and I stay there a lot and fell in love with the area,” she said, adding her two favorite spots to eat are across the street from each other on Myrtle Avenue.

“Being a southern girl, I love the southern food at the Five Spot and right across the street, (Big Jimmy’s) Kum Kau has the best Chinese food,” she said.

Barnes said she came to the city right after graduation from the University of Alabama to pursue a career in dance and quickly passed the audition to become a Nets dancer.

“Before the season started we rehearsed on Tuesdays and Thursdays so it wasn’t too stressful, but now we’re into the season and sometimes we do back to back games so we’re at the arena almost every day. It’s fun though. We love the girls. We love the team and we just work very hard,” said Barnes.

“My ultimate goal is to be fulfilled in every sense of the word, and dancing is my ultimate fulfillment, so just making it to the very top is my goal,” she added.

Brooklyn bachelors who may be wondering on their chances of dating either of these two beautiful and talented ladies should know that Kimbough is spoken for, while Barnes, flashing a pearly white smile, said she is “definitely single.”

Personally, I think this move’s a sign of the fall of the Atlanta Falcons. DeAngelo Hall may have been hot-headed at points, but his talent was unmistakable. I also think DHall was frustrated with the totally inept way the team was being ran under Bobby Petrino.

Now it seems the Falcons are willing to part with a second round pick for Hall. What Atlanta will do without Hall remains to be seen, but I think they may have been swayed by some of Hall’s poor performances in 2008. Yes, he’s a great cornerback, but it seemed that his head wasn’t in the game and he may have been trying to do everything he could to get Petrino out of there without, you know, getting him out of there.

Still a bad and organizationally immature move.

Watercooler Chat week 16 By David Ortega for Football Reporters Online

A Wireless Week

For most computer geeks wireless is usually a very good thing, but for fantasy owners it means you have to roll with what you got; sometimes that’s not so good. If you’re stuck with few choices, but have a chance to tap into the free market here’s what our good buddy Wayne “The Wire” Bosco has to offer…

Wayne says…

It’s always better to play the hot hand, rather than a cold one which could be the case this week. With Jerome Harrison coming off a career day 286 yards on the ground and set to face a questionable Raiders run defense (ranked 28th against the run), those are plenty of reasons to jump on the Brown’s running back’s milk-truck. Harrison has not done a whole lot in 2009, but he made a loud statement last week and it’s a good bet that the Brown’s coaching staff was listening. He should be featured quite a bit on Sunday and could be very good play against Oakland. This game is going to lack a lot of great defense, so there should be plenty of big plays on offense from both sides; including Mr. Harrison.

The Titan’s will have a difficult matchup on Friday night against the San Diego Chargers, but there’s no question two of the biggest keys for Tennessee will be Chris Johnson and Vince Young. What some folks may not be aware of, rookie wide receiver Kenny Britt will also be a huge key for the Titans. While Britt has cooled off some the past couple of weeks, he’ll be an important instrument in the Titans success. With the Charger’s starting corners preoccupied with Tennessee’s other receivers (Gage, Washington), Britt is going to see some favorable coverages and should be targeted quite a bit in this one. When Young has looked for Britt, the kid has been big with three touchdowns in his last five games and facing the explosive Chargers the Titans will have to throw the ball.

The Colts are not going to head into this Week 16 matchup lightly and if Peyton Mannng has any say, they will play to win. This week’s matchup with the Jets will present many challenges, but with New York’s shutdown corner Darrelle Revis pretty much locking up Reggie Wayne the Colts second year wideout Pierre Garcon could be big. Garcon starting opposite Wayne has played well when called on this season has been quiet the past couple of weeks, but could become a primary weapon against the Jets. Last week Garcon saw only two throws in his direction, but in his six games prior he saw no fewer than eight (averaging more than nine). This should be a matchup for the Colts second year wideout that gets him back on track.

Waynes Weekly “Friendly Word for the wise”…

The Niners are basically playing for pride now, but their quarteback could be playing for a whole lot more; a strong finish. Quarterback Alex Smith has not quite sold the idea he’s the team’s future, but a strong finish could go a long way. With the rookie Michael Crabtree one of his favorite and best targets, it safe to say he (Crabtree) will likely play a big part in the success of the passing game down the stretch. A late arrival this season Crabtree has been a very positive addition to the team’s passing attack and with his quarterback looking to make a statement, expect Crabtree to be a huge beneficiary. Despite playing in just nine games Crabtree is amongst the team leaders in receptions, yards, and touchdowns for wide receivers. With Smith continuing to call his number, expect the rookie to see his numbers greatly improve.

Player Watch for Week 16

Once again here a few players of note that fantasy owners should consider riding or hiding for the coming weekend of games. Keep these players on your watchlist, you just may want to give them a hard look come Sunday;

(Start) JermIchael Finley
The Packer’s tight end has been better than consistent with 21 receptions and three touchdowns in his last three games. He’s a huge target in the red-zone and quarterback Aaron Rodgers is looking his direction more and more.

(Start) Vince Young
The Titans quarterback Vince Young has been a fantasy keeper over the past several weeks averaging more than 20 fantasy points in his last three starts, including three touchdown passes last week. There’s no reason to believe he shouldn’t do more of the same against the Chargers 15th ranked defense on Christmas night.

(Sit) Thomas Jones
As reliable and solid as running back Thomas Jones has been all season, this game could simple be a case where he just won’t get any opportunity. The Colts offense is just so impressive they could easily turn the Jets offense to one dimensional by jumping out big real quick. Thomas is likely a long shot to see more than 15 carries in this one.

(Start) Michael Bush
The Raiders running back Michael Bush has to love his chances this Sunday against the Browns defense after watching highlights of Jamaal Charles shredding it for 150 yards on the ground. Bush is coming off a season high effort of 133 yards of his own and should do well in Cleveland.

(Sit) Knowshon Moreno
The Broncos backfield will likely be a little crowded on Sunday with the return of running back Correll Buckhalter. With the Eagles 10th ranked run defense on the slate fantasy owners shouldn’t expect a great effort from rookie running back Knowshon Moreno.

(Start) Pierre Thomas
The Saints lost their bid on perfection, but they won’t just lay down the rest of the way. They need to get back to winning with their balanced attack and with Buccaneers (ranked 30th against the run) in town Pierre Thomas should be featured even more on the ground this Sunday.

Manning in his 5th season was named to his first Pro Bowl along with 6 other Giants players (Tuck, Snee, O’Hara, Feagles, Carney).

Eli and Peyton Manning become the first set of brothers to ever play in the Pro Bowl. Eli has completed 60.3 % of his passes for 2938 yards and 20 TD compared to only 10 interceptions. Manning’s passer rating is 86.4 for the season.

Pretty happy that Eli has accomplished this, beating out other passers in the NFC like Tony Romo, Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, and Donovan Mcnabb. Hopefully this is the first in a long line of Pro Bowl selections for Eli.
